Browns Bay teams dominated the Bowls North Harbour open centre events over the weekend, with the Brent Turner skipped fours taking out the Men’s title.
Of the top 8 teams that qualified for the Men’s Fours after the first day on Saturday, 5 were from Browns Bay setting up a couple of local derby's in the post section rounds held at Birkenhead on Sunday. In the first post section round, the Dave McMurchy Four of Mark Holland, Grant Keats and Graham Champion upset the favoured combination of Neil Fisher, John Walker, Colin Rogan and Brian Wilson taking out the match 17-10, while the Brent Turner combination of Kerry Chapman, Scott Evans and Rory Sowden proved to strong for the Alan Mytton skipped team of Richard Talbot, Gary Hutchings and Colin Mortimer, winning 21-10.
Next door, Brad Reichert, Ed Hanson, Royden James and John Ellison fought out a cliff hanger, eventually beating the well performed Takapuna team of John Janssen, Mark Emerali, Murray Mathieson and John Sakey, 13-12.
In the semi finals, Reichert lost 22-14 to the Ian Pyke skipped Northcote team, while Turner edged out McMurchy 11-10 in another very close game.
The finals was another enthralling encounter with Turner bagging yet another centre title for the season with a 16-12 win over Pyke’s Northcote combination of John Hindmarch, Mike Haggart and Marty Short.
In the Women’s Open Pairs, Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts came up against the other qualifying Browns Bay team of Lin East and Lesley Langer in the first post section round, winning 17-7. However, in the next round, the Mairangi Bay team Hilary Ross and Raewyn Parker proved too strong, beating the Browns Bay duo 19-8. Ross went on to take out the title, beating Orewa’s Gail Bagnall and Cindy Henley 20-8.
Well done to all the Browns Bay team for a fantastic effort.
